Jamie Oliver’s Kitchen Garden Project is a food education programme for children aged 3-11. It supports primary school teachers and facilitators in delivering effective cooking lessons through free enticing digital resources, which includes more than 200 recipes, 60 factsheets and 10 gardening units. Carefully curated by our partners Food For Life, the lessons are designed to give teachers the tools and confidence they need to engage children through food.
St Mary’s the Mount RC Primary School, Liverpool: “It has been a very positive experience. Children are requesting recipes to take home, then bringing in pictures of their own baking. Some pupils are trying fruit and vegetables they've never tried before, and there have been some lively discussions about the nutrients they contain and how they benefit the body.”

There are so many benefits to having food education on the curriculum. Not only is it an essential life skill that all children should learn before they leave school, it also showcases great potential career options. Everyone should have the opportunity to learn to cook; without it we become dependent on others to feed us, or on convenience foods to fuel us – neither of which is sustainable. It’s crucial that young people have a good understanding of where food comes from, how to cook it and how it affects our bodies for good health in later life.
We have created a comprehensive Ministry of Food resource pack for secondary schools, aimed at teaching those in KS3 how to cook. The resources are based around 10 practical lessons that follow a progression of key skills, and each comes complete with a lesson plan, recipes and supporting resources, which cover nutrition topics, sustainability and information about where our food comes from. Videos from Jamie, his son Buddy and the Ministry of Food team also help to bring the content to life.
Since September 2023, we’ve been working with 40 schools to test and refine the programme. From September 2024 we will roll out the programme more widely. If you are interested in signing up, please contact us.
